Federal Stimulus Money Awarded to Open Door Family Medical Centers Community Health Center Receives $1.3 million for Physical Improvements

Ossining, N.Y. (PRWEB) July 8, 2009 -- Open Door Family Medical Centers (opendoormedical.org) announced that they have received $1.3 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The stimulus funds will be used to make physical improvements at three of the federally qualified community health center's four sites in Westchester County.

"We are delighted to receive this second wave of stimulus funding," said Lindsay Farrell, Open Door's President & CEO. "Access to capital has been an enormous challenge for us for so many years, these funds from the Recovery Act will be put to immediate and good use."

The ARRA funds will be used for the following projects:

1.    Ossining

•    Addition of two new family medicine and pediatric exam rooms

•    Provide access for 1000 new patients

•    Improvement of patient flow on first floor

2.    Sleepy Hollow

•    Installation of an elevator providing access to the second floor

•    Creation of a central patient record room

•    Creation of three dental exam rooms

•    Provide access for 1000 dental patients. (Currently an estimated 1,000 people from the Sleepy Hollow community travel to Ossining for dental services)

3.    Port Chester

•    Expansion of medical services to allow for three additional providers and 11 additional exam rooms

•    Provide access for 3000 new patients

•    Completion of Wellness Center for rollout of new Living Well Program

4.    IT Improvements

•    Improve speed, access and reliability for electronic patient medical records (EMR) to accommodate additional providers

•    Rollout of pilot project for a "Patient Portal" that will provide access to results and communication between all Open Door offices, providers and patients directly

Open Door serves a vast multi-cultural community and has provided top quality medical and dental care and social services to the Westchester community, particularly the economically disadvantaged, for 37 years. The organization has four centers in Westchester located in Ossining, Port Chester, Mt. Kisco and Sleepy Hollow. In addition, Open Door operates School-Based Health Centers in Port Chester at The Edison Elementary School, Kennedy Magnet School, Port Chester Middle School and Port Chester High School. In 2008, approximately 40,000 patients were treated at Open Door, making 178,000 patient visits. Over 9,000 children were treated during that same year. Funding for the federally qualified community health center comes from local, state and federal grants as well as private foundations and individuals.
